Post-Operative Care After Extractions

At Dentures Today, we want you to have the best possible experience with your dental care. That's why we provide detailed instructions for postoperative care after extractions.

Following these instructions can help you heal faster and reduce the risk of complications :
  1. CONTROLLING BLEEDING
Remove the gauze pack(s) after one hour.  If bleeding is excessive, place a folded gauze pad or a moistened tea bag over the extraction site and bite firmly for 30 minutes with constant pressure. Assume a semi-upright position using a couple of pillows. Slight bleeding is expected for the first day.
  2. REDUCING SWELLING AND DISCOMFORT
Reduce swelling and discomfort by applying an ice pack to the cheek over the extraction site for 10-20 minutes at a time.
  3. REST AND AVOID STRENUOUS ACTIVITY
Rest for the remainder of the day after your extraction and avoid strenuous activity for the first few days.
  4. AVOID SMOKING
Smoking can delay healing and increase the risk of complications. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products for at least 3 days after the extraction.
  5. DRINKING THROUGH A STRAW
Sucking through a straw can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the extraction site, leading to a painful condition called dry socket. Avoid drinking through a straw for the first few days after your extraction.
  6. SOFT FOODS
Stick to soft foods for the first few days after your extraction, such as soup, pudding, or mashed potatoes. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that can irritate the extraction site.
  7. KEEPING THE EXTRACTION SITE CLEAN
After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) 2-3 times a day to keep the extraction site clean and prevent infection. Avoid brushing or flossing the extraction site for the first day or two.
  8. PAIN MANAGEMENT
Your dentist may prescribe pain medication to manage any discomfort after the extraction. Take it as prescribed, and do not exceed the recommended dose.
  9. INFECTION
Signs of infection include increased pain and swelling after 3 days, redness, warmth, drainage of pus, foul smell, and fever. If these occur, contact our office
  10. FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT
If you have been given an appointment for post-operative care, please return to the office as scheduled. If you are experiencing problems or have questions, please call the office.
