Post-Operative Care After Implant Bridge

At Dentures Today, we want you to have the best possible experience with your dental care. That's why we provide detailed instructions for postoperative care after extractions.

Following these instructions can help you heal faster and reduce the risk of complications :
  1. RINSING
    Avoid rinsing your mouth or spitting today. Beginning tomorrow you may rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt to 1 cup warm water) every 2-3 hours for the first couple of days. If you have been prescribed Peridex rinse, use as directed on the bottle.
  2. EATING
    IT IS CRITICAL THAT YOU EAT ONLY SOFT FOODS ONLY FOR THE NEXT 12 WEEKS. FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY CAUSE FAILURE OF YOUR IMPLANTS.
    • All foods should be chopped and cut into small pieces
    • All foods should be soft
    • If you can hear yourself chewing the food, it is too hard
    • Do not bite into an sandwiches, breads, pizza, etc.
    • Only soft meats like fish, tender cut up chicken or pork, ground beef
    • No raw vegetables unless they are blended or juiced
    • Cooked vegetables should be soft
  3. PAIN AND INFECTION
    Take your medications as prescribed. Finish all antibiotics and steroids if given. If you develop hives or a rash, discontinue all medications and contact our office. Do not drive or operate mechanical equipment after taking prescription pain medications.
  4. SWELLING
    Apply an ice pack—20 minutes on and 20 minutes off—to the jaw immediately upon returning home and change it frequently. Continue this on and off for 24–48 hours. Peak swelling should occur between the second and third day postoperatively and diminish slowly thereafter.
  5. ORAL HYGIENE
    The day following your procedure, begin rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater. This can be continued 3-4 times per day for the next few days after surgery. Starting on the 2nd day you can gently brush your teeth with a very soft toothbrush. Do not disturb the surgery sit. Do not use a Waterpik or like device or hydrogen peroxide rinses for at least 2 weeks following surgery. When you begin using a Waterpik, begin on the lower setting of water pressure.
  6. ACTIVITY
    Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours, as this will increase blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from extraction site(s).
  7. FOLLOW-UP
    You will see your dentist a few days after surgery for any adjustments to your temporary teeth and possible placement on new temporaries. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at the office any time.
